Finding community and belonging can be hard, especially if you're starting at a new school and/or city. Here are some of the student organizations at our law school.
The Asian Pacific American Law Student Association supports Asian and Pacific Islander (API) law students in their academic and career goals. The organization is dedicated to advocating Asian American leadership in all areas of law by encouraging the sharing, networking, and cooperation between all ethnic groups, especially Asian and Pacific Islander American students.
Pitt Law's Black Law Students Association is organized to empower Black law students, foster academic achievement, community involvement, and strong leadership in the legal profession. An affiliate of the National Black Law Students' Association, Pitt's BLSA focuses on sensitizing the legal establishment to the needs of the Black community, promoting the professional needs of Black law students, and assisting in the recruitment, retention, and placement of students of color.
JLSA's goal is to help meet the needs of Jewish students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, by providing a community and forum to discuss Jewish social, cultural, legal, and religious topics. Our organization includes secular as well as observant students, and all of our events are open to the entire law school community. Activities include social events, speakers on Jewish and/or legal topics, and events celebrating Jewish holidays.
The Latinx Student Association (LSA) serves as an organization centered around the advancement and success of Pitt's Latinx students. LSA hopes to achieve this by motivating Pitt's Latinx students through leadership development and intentional mentorship. LSA acts as an educational outlet for the general Pitt community. LSA will educate the community through educational programming and events like discussions and speakers. LSA advocates for the concerns, needs and interests of Pitt's Latinx students and will communicate them to the administration and the Pitt community. LSA also celebrates the unique perspective of Latinx students and their culture through social events and festivals.
The Pitt Law Women's Association (PLWA) was founded to give female law students a community within a male-dominated field. As women's equality in the law has grown, PLWA has changed as well into an organization dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of women in the law and helping to provide career guidance and support to anyone who is dedicated to furthering gender equity in the profession.
501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to supporting law students who accept public interest summer internships. These internships are typically unpaid, and PLISF believes a student should not have to turn down a position they truly want due to lack of financing options. Throughout the year, PLISF fundraises to provide scholarships to students taking public interest internship positions. PLISF also holds events, coordinates volunteer opportunities, and advertises job openings to support and promote student interest and practice in public interest law.
OUTlaw's mission is to create a supportive community within the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and to raise awareness of law-related issues specific to the LGBTQ community. In order to achieve that mission, OUTLaw coordinates professional development activities, educational programs, and social events geared towards LGBTQ students and allies at Pitt Law.
Not only is it important for us to recognize that well-being is fundamental to the overall health of our students, it's important for you to as well!
