Located on floors three, four, and five, the library serves as the "laboratory" for the work of both students and faculty and is an important information center for practicing lawyers and for scholars from other disciplines. The main floor of the library is the fourth floor, hosting the circulation desk, the reference desk, group-study rooms, microform room, Hickton Center for Community Legal Services & Clinical Legal Education, Center for Civil Rights and Racial Justice, the Eberly Foundation Technology Learning Center, and Reserve, Commons, and Study Guides collection,. We encourage students utilize all the resources provided to them, and we hope this guide is a starting point of discovery.
This page will introduce the different facets of the library from reference, circulation, reserving study rooms, circulation policies, hours, and how to borrow equipment.
The Law Library Reference Desk, located on the fourth floor of the library, is our main point of contact for research and reference related questions. The Reference Desk is staffed from 9:00 am through 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and Sundays from 10:00 am through 6:00 pm. Come in person, email barcoref@pitt.edu, or call the reference line at 412 648-1325.
The reference staff can also be reached online. Use our Ask a Librarian form to contact our reference services. Feel free to contact us at any time, and your question will be answered during the next scheduled reference shift if posed before or after hours.
Appointments
Appointments with individual librarians are encouraged and can be scheduled by emailing the reference line or contacting the individual librarian directly.

Circulation desk staff are often the first point of contact for law students when you walk into the library. The staff at the circulation desk can help you find resources, show you how to work scanners and microfiche, provide directional assistance, and check-out and return books as well as provide circulating equipment.
A lot can be done in Barco Law Library: you can find plenty of relevant texts in our stacks, utilize our study rooms to work independent or with friends, or just hang out on one of the three floors. While the third and fifth floor are designated quiet study spaces, conversation is encouraged on the fourth floor. Feel free to strike up conversations with friends and classmates, or library staff. Have some down time? Work on our community puzzles, borrow a chess board, or try out the massage chair.
Below are resources on what equipment we offer, our current circulation policies, and how to reserve a study. You are more than welcome to check with the circulation desk if you have any questions.
It's important to note that we have two types of hours: Service hours and Open hours. During service hours, librarians and circulation staff will be servicing the desk. Open hours mean that the library is still open, but accessible via swipe-access only.
